Metronome increments are simply the "clicks" you see on an old-fashion metronome. These increments actually represent the BPM (beats per minute), but the increase in the BPM between each "click" are progressively greater as the beats become faster (see chart). Most people these days, including myself, prefer the convenience of a digital metronome, but the BPM increase in these devices are continuous (e.g. 100, 101, 102...etc). which can be misleading, because 40-41 is half a "click", where 180-181 is only 1/8 of a click .
Unfortunately, hardly any students are aware of this. Seems like the younger generation simply uses a "convenient" increase of BPM by multiples of 5, such as: 120, 125, 130, 135. Here's one of my teaching pet peeve, what's convenient is usually not the best solution
