I don't necessarily have a favorite composer, but if you ask me who do I think is the greatest, then to me it is definitely Beethoven. He wrote his famous Heiligenstadt Testament when he was struggling immensely with the gradual loss of his hearing in the 30s. The experience was such an ordeal that he thought of ending his life, but he didn't because he felt that God has given him something to contribute to mankind.
Not only did he not given up on his career, he triumphed over his struggles and continued to break with classical traditions, paving the ways to the new generation of Romantic composers. His music was beyond powerful, as some of they became transcendental. How he boldly introduced the chrous in his 9th Symphony to sing the theme of universal brotherhood with Ode to Joy can only be made possible in the hands of a true musical genius.
